Official pay figures, read the way each country publishes them

Every figure is one a national statistics office has published: its median, its mean, its percentiles, by occupation, sex, age, schooling and area. Nothing is modelled, taken from job adverts or guessed. Each figure keeps its own currency and period, with US dollars and today's prices beside it.

What is in it

The same shape for every country, so a figure from Japan reads like one from Finland, without losing what makes each one its own.

01

The statistic, named

Median, mean, the 10th to the 90th percentile, minimum wages, starting pay and bonuses, each named in one shape: pay.median.monthly.

02

Its own period

A year, a quarter, a half or a month, as the office published it, from the first year it published to the latest release.

03

Every breakdown there is

Occupation, sex, age, schooling, hours, region and industry, wherever the office publishes them.

04

Its own currency

Kept in whole units of money as published, with US dollars at the average rate of that period beside it.

05

Today's prices

Each country's own consumer price index turns any year's pay into today's, so the years compare.

06

Revisions followed

When an office revises a figure, the new one replaces it, and the release log says when.

Every country

What each country publishes, how far back and how recent. The letters are the breakdowns it gives: occupation, sex, age, education, area.

How a figure gets here

Four steps, the same for every table.

01

Published

A national statistics office releases its pay figures, in its own tables and words.

02

Read as published

Each figure is taken as it stands, with its period, unit and currency, never rounded or filled in.

03

Named and dated

Its statistic, its pay period and who it covers are read from the table, so it answers in the API's one shape.

04

Checked

Figures that cannot be pay per person (a total, a count) are held back, and every release is checked against the last.
